Therapy with me
"I usually describe my therapy as short-term, solution-focused cognitive therapy." - Glen Bryan
Short term: The benefit of having private therapy is that you can have as many sessions as you need, but many of my clients find that they are happy to stop coming to see me after 6-10 sessions. My career in London was mainly in in GP practices, where I had a limited number of sessions with each client, so I developed the skill of delivering psychological knowledge in as few sessions as possible.
Solution-focused: My aim is to quickly work out with you the goals of therapy. - what you want to be different at the end of the process. This is not always obvious at first, but I am always conscious that you are spending money on therapy, so it needs to provide value.
Cognitive therapy is an all-encompassing term. It really just means working with our thoughts. I
lean towards CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) because it includes the different useful or less helpful behaviours that result from our thoughts. I also like ACT (Acceptance and commitment therapy), because it includes looking at our values as a guide to our behaviour. I am also keen on compassion- based therapy, as I see a lot of people who struggle with negative self-critical thoughts and would benefit from learning self-compassion.
My style is very straightforward. I don’t use jargon and I try not to look or sound like the scary therapists on television. I want to help my clients understand what might be going on in their lives and thinking patterns as quickly and easily as possible.
I see my job as providing you with tools and
strategies to handle any problems or reach your goals in your life.
I’ve been a clinical psychologist for over 30 years, so I know a lot about psychology, but you are the expert on your life.
I’ve been told that my easy-to-understand style makes me less intimidating for people who have never seen a psychologist before.

- Glen Bryan, TEDx Gothenburg

My client list is about 60% men, so I’m used to discussing topics that can impact men differently, including shifting ideas about masculinity, male body image issues, sexual dysfunctions affecting men and loneliness.
